Letstalk is dead on! For accurate answers a marine forum will be priceless in your adventure into SW. I am a member/ moderator/ and education committee leader for WWW.MAAST.ORG. There are people on 24/7 sharing knowledge, ideas, and experience. You should check us out!

To help right now though, A canister filter will be fine for a FO tank. You do plan on adding live rock correct? For an 80 gallon I would add (2) Koralia 4′s or (3) Koralia 3′s… or of equal size. They will be expensive….but so will everything else in this hobby. I like www.aquacave.com. They have consistently low prices w/ a variety of options.

As for your fish list, it may need some tweaking. Don’t worry about the starfish for a very minimum of 6 months unless you go with a chocolate chip star. Those are fairly hardy. The blue damsel and dotty back (not royal dotty lol) can be the meanest little snots. If you decide on those, be sure and add them after all your other tank mates. Hope this helps. Feel free to email me any other questions and check out our website.
