Why most divers in US frown upon spear fishing?
Many times when I shop for diving equipment and ask something about spear fishing I almost get kicked out of the store. I grew up in the Mediterranean and we spear fish as a sport, without using any SCUBA gear (even if you wanted I suppose all the bubble noises and heavy gear would alert the fish anyway).A large majority of people who love the sport know how to protect the environment (they usually are the ones who work the most to keep the fish alive and breeding). We only can remain in their environments for a very short period of time and fish have all the advantages against the human (unlike hunting when people use special scents, electronic equipment, decoys etc) So why one gets treated like a mass murderer when one even talks about spear fishing?
Maybe I’m throwing the baby out with the bath water, but when I read the story about poaching of the endangered black sea bass in California, I would rather ban spear fishing all together.
In this case, a docile 171# sea bass that was 15 years old has killed in a marine preserve.
