If you have been fly fishing for any length of time you know that there are different kinds of rods meant to be used for many different purposes. Each rod is designed for a specific task. Ultimately you have to decide which of the various types of fly fishing rods is right for you. The best teacher will be experience. Fly fishing rods are the most important tool for fishermen. A rods purpose is to cast the fly line leader and fly to the fish. After the fly lands, the rod can then be used to control the line and fly. After the fish is hooked, the rod can be used to drive the hook into the mouth of the fish and to make sure that it does not get away while you are bringing it in.

If you are new to purchasing fly fishing rods, here are some pointers. Since the fly fishing rod is one of your most important tools, be sure to invest in one that is of high quality. You don’t want to have to continuously buy new rods, and the high quality rods retain their value quite well. When you are considering your purchase, buy either even or odd weight rods. If you want to fish in both salt and fresh water, buy anodized real seats.

You will need to be aware of the weight of a fly rod. This does not refer to how heavy it is but about the size line. The fly line weight determines the type of fishing that you will do. Weights range from 1 to 15. Find a rod that is suitable to use in both ponds and streams. A middle weight line and rod should be sufficient for the job.

The casting performance of a rod refers to its action and is measured by two characteristics. The first characteristic is where and how much the rod bends after it has been loaded by the fly-line. The second characteristic is how fast the rod recovers from the bend. Like most fishermen you will most likely prefer a rod with a faster action.

You should become familiar with the parts of the fly fishing rods if you want to get the most out of them. The butt of the rod is the stiffest, adding both strength and length to the fly fishing rod. The butt can be used to put leverage on a fish that is fighting to get off the rod and adds protection for the fisherman. Another part of the rod is the reel seat. Its holds the reel in place so that it is properly aligned with the guides. The two parts of the reel includes the reel seat where the actual reel sits, and the reel seat lock that keeps the reel where it belongs.

The grip or cork part of the fly fishing rods is where the fisherman will hold the rod. There are a variety of grip styles to choose from and you will choose based on the grip that you feel most comfortable with. Fly rods will be your most important tool, so choose wisely.
