Tips for soft plastic frogs.?
There is a river that I want to fish in where, according to fishing reports, Bass can be caught. I assume that they will start coming up into the river when spring comes because the shallow river water will be warmer than the rest of the lake, if this is correct, will soft plastic frogs work in spring in clear to stained water? What are some effective colors? Where in the river should i fish them?
If it sounds like I’m asking stupid questions, I’ve never used frogs, or any other topwater techniques for that matter, and would like to learn.
A couple of years ago the frog was my favorite lure to fish. I found the Stanley Ribbit frog to be the most effective one out of the solid body frogs, and the red pearl color seemed to be the one the fish preferred the best.
The one thing you will need to do when fishing the solid body frog is to rig it with a hook that is designed for frog fishing. They are super large and will help you get a solid hook set.You will find if you can get a hook up out of every three strikes you are doing good. But it is so much fun to fish them, I used them most of the spring and summer one year.

The next frog I went to in order to improve my hood sets is the Bass Pro frog. I got a much higher ratio of hook-ups to strikes using it, I assume because it was a hollow body frog and the hooks were built into it, made the difference. But the Bass Pro frog is strictly a top water frog ( exciting blowups on it) and the Ribbit is retrieved mostly under water with a stop and go using short easy twitches of the rod tip

But here is a tip for you when you get a strike on the frog. I found that by instantly lowering my rod tip so the fish could not feel any tension, and counting to about 5 or even longer before setting the hook, I could get more hook sets that resulted in landing more fish. That’s something to keep in mind.
The frog works, and it is fun to fish. You’r going to love it.
